Rocky Knob/Rock Castle Gorge
We recommend Rocky Knob trails for great hiking…up to an 11 mile loop. It is one of the first developed areas on the Blue Ridge Parkway and is noted for its rustic and rural landscape (plus great hiking). The Rocky Knob recreation area covers more than 4000 acres. Four trails offer a variety of scenic and historical wonders. The Rock Castle Gorge trail descends over three miles into the backcountry camping area in the bottom of the gorge. The strenuous and rugged nature of the trail reveal part of the reason this pathway was given National Recreational Trail status.
On the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 176, Mabry Mill is perhaps the most iconic structure on the entire Blue Ridge Parkway. This gristmill still grinds flour more than a century since its original construction! See the nearby Matthews Cabin, blacksmith shop and interpretive area. See demonstrations on blacksmithing, carding, spinning, basket making and other traditional Appalachian crafts.
